Cloud Atlas: A Review of the Epic Sci-Fi Film

Cloud Atlas is a 2012 film based on the novel by David Mitchell, directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer. It is a complex and ambitious film that explores how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.

The film features an ensemble cast that includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, James D'Arcy, Zhou Xun, Keith David, Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant. The actors play multiple roles across six different eras, ranging from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future. The film uses makeup, prosthetics and digital effects to transform the actors into different characters of various ages, genders, races and ethnicities.

The film consists of six interrelated and interwoven stories that span different genres and styles. The stories are:

The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing (1849): A young American lawyer travels across the Pacific Ocean and befriends a stowaway Moriori slave who saves his life from a treacherous doctor.

Letters from Zedelghem (1936): A bisexual English musician works as an amanuensis for a famous composer and writes letters to his lover while creating his own masterpiece.

Half-Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery (1973): A journalist investigates a conspiracy involving a nuclear power plant and is aided by a scientist who is the recipient of the letters from Zedelghem.

The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish (2012): A publisher flees from his creditors and is tricked into staying at a nursing home where he plots to escape with other residents.

An Orison of Sonmi-451 (2144): A genetically engineered fabricant (clone) working at a fast-food restaurant is rescued by a rebel leader and learns the truth about her society and her own destiny.

Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ev'rythin' After (2321): A tribesman living in a post-apocalyptic Hawaii meets a woman from a technologically advanced civilization who seeks his help to activate a satellite communication device.

The film explores themes such as reincarnation, karma, freedom, oppression, love, courage, fate and destiny. It also examines how human actions have consequences that affect not only themselves but also others across time and space. The film suggests that there is a connection between all living beings and that every life matters.

Cloud Atlas received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. Some praised its ambition, scope, visuals, performances and message, while others criticized its length, complexity, coherence, pacing and tone. The film was also controversial for its use of yellowface and whitewashing in some of its segments. The film was nominated for several awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Original Score. It was also one of the most expensive independent films ever made, with a budget of over $100 million.

Cloud Atlas is a film that challenges viewers to think and feel beyond their comfort zones. It is a film that celebrates the diversity and interconnectedness of humanity. It is a film that asks us to question our own actions and choices. It is a film that invites us to imagine what kind of world we want to live in. 248dff8e21
